What is a Chemical Peel and do I need one?

A chemical peel by definition is when a chemical solution is applied to the skin with the goal of resurfacing and remove top layers of old skin. Chemical peels are a great way to address pigment concerns, acne, fine lines and wrinkles, and overall tone and texture. Chemical peels are a way to deeply exfoliate the skin and allow for proper cell turnover so the healthy cells can flourish. There are various chemical peels but one of my personal favorites is the Perfect Derma Peel that we carry at Sundrop Aesthetics.

The Perfect Derma Peel is a great peel for everyone because it is inclusive for all skin types. It is also the only chemical peel with glutathione in it, which is known as the most powerful antioxidant. Glutathione specifically helps by reversing damage caused by free radicals, and is powerful and strong enough to get deep to the cellular level of the skin.

Now, let’s go over the pros and cons of a chemical peel….

The pros are the fact that the peel offers many benefits. It improves skin tone, texture, clarity, and reduces pore size. Peels will help mitigate acne and even scars, and smooths wrinkles. Chemical peels also stimulate collagen and elastin for healthy, firm, and rejuvenated skin.

The cons are few but chemical peels do require some downtime. Although easy enough, downtime can still be challenging with our busy schedules. This means no sunbathing or products on skin while it is recovering and peeling. Because of this, it is imperative not to get a peel just prior to vacation or an important event and may require moving plans around. Chemical peels are not the best idea if you are a skin picker with no will power, since picking can lead to injury, infection, or scars. It is important to follow post procedure care protocols for best results as well too. Also, not necessarily a con, but some people may require more than one peel depending on what shape their skin is in.

Overall, the pros outweigh the cons and the peel itself is very safe and beneficial. Chemical peels only take about 15-20 minutes to apply and the peeling is usually about 3-5 days total as well. The peels are very well tolerated and our patients love the results they get!
